In an age of orthodox irony and chic cynicism, Maneos has penned a manifesto for beauty. The premise of the novella is that the private letters between two young writers, Gabriele Paterkallos and Odysseus Pane, have been stolen from Odysseus' apartment in Paris, and are printed against their will. Many letters describe Gabriele's varied travels in Italy, so even if one does not grasp every classical allusion within the tome, the work will certainly appeal to Italians and Italophiles.
Maneos describes Italy in such majestic detail that I had the urge to immediately book a flight to the Eternal City to trace the steps of his heroic protagonist, Gabriele.
